[This is another piece that was in my drafts folder that I really thought I had sent out. Enjoy]
I just got back from a great time of evangelism visits. I am a dinosaur: I think knocking on doors still works. Today was a little different in that there was one fellow who had been pushing for us to go out. I usually do the pushing to go door to door.
The culprit was Josh McKay. He roped me and our youth minister Ben Palmer into going out today.
Today, of all days… late this afternoon as temperatures plummet and drizzle turned to ice.
Back in the day when I was at my first church, I was out visiting on a snowy day. A woman answered the door and said “I guess the saying is true, ‘nothing out on days like this except crows and Methodist preachers.’” I have tried to go out specifically on nasty days because it lets people know you are serious! And it starts conversations about why on earth you would be out in such weather…
Josh, Ben, and I met at the church. We discussed a little strategy, prayed and then went out. Josh told us he was nervous because he used to do door to door sales and he hated it. I was really surprised that if he was this nervous, why was he pushing so hard for us to go out? I love it!
We spent about an hour and a half, hitting every house on a block. We had some great conversation along the way about how to think about going door to door, what does it mean, how does it work, being ready for if someone wants to talk a bit… and they did at a couple houses.
I will probably say more about some strategies we developed on the way back to the church as we debriefed our time of visits. For now… what does this have to do with multiplication? It is very hard to win people to Christ if you won’t go where they are and try to learn something about who they are and what their spiritual needs are. And a key piece of discipling others is to help them get out there and do the work themselves!
