Ingesting Mass Amounts of Scripture
If I had kept up the consistent pace of reading 20 chapters a day, I would have read the Bible 36 times since I started the read-throughs in January 2020.
I did not keep that pace. For a whole bunch of reasons.
Being awnry. Ornery? You get the picture.
Getting busy.
Being tired.
Being sick.
Not finishing 20 chapters.
I did a 90 day that ended in October and decided to get my cred back and finish strong on a 2-month blitz.
I gotta say, it has felt good. I am actually at 700 chapters… You gotta read more when you can. So I am 11 days ahead. That may change. But Thanksgiving and Christmas usually give me the time to really live in the Word.
I think this will be either 29 or 30 times thru since 2020? I lose track and don’t suppose I care. The goal is to read.
A theme seems to be emerging: the Lord will provide.
So there I was, jamming out and feeling pretty good about myself. Then Francis Chan happened. Tuesday evening at the Exponential Conference, he had… What? A worship night? I don’t know what to call it. Some great music by his kids. A communion meditation, then communion. It was intense and beautiful.
He spoke again on Wednesday. An inspiring message on discipleship and multiplication (I kid you not). Here’s the kicker. It was from Numbers 8. For reals. He pulled a discipleship multiplication message from Numbers 8 on the mandatory retirement age of the Levites.
He dropped a hint—probably didn’t mean to— on how he pulled that off. He was talking about how important it is to love Scripture. He mentioned that we probably should memorize Romans. Talked about how much he loved getting up early to get into the Word, and how he…. Had read the Bible 12 times last year.
I could feel the team’s collective eyes on me. I could sense they thought I was a slacker. I mumbled, “don’t threaten me with a good time…” and then I said to everyone, “he meant he read Romans 12 times.”
